On September 18-19, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Dignity and Rights project, implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in close cooperation with the Library of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, UNESCO, and UNDP, will conduct a Regional Thematic Workshop, “A Tale of Two Crises: Migration and Violent Extremism,” in Astana, Kazakhstan. The workshop will address issues at the nexus of migration, education, and development in the prevention of violent extremism and is open to the media. 

The workshop is designed to help government, non-government, and community organizations from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan improve activities used to counter radicalization and to discuss how education and development can be used in the prevention of violent extremism. The event will focus on migrants’ vulnerabilities, including the re-entry of banned migrants and their potential for violent extremism. Participants will also discuss the conclusions and recommendations of IOM’s regional assessments on “Migrants’ Vulnerabilities and Integration Needs in Central Asia.” 

The Dignity and Rights Project, which aims to advance human rights and dignity in Central Asia as an issue of public policy and civic culture, is one of the many assistance projects made possible by the American people through the USAID in Central Asia.  It is implemented by the International Organization for Migration, UN Migration Agency, Sub Regional Coordination Office for Central Asia.
